Pony car is an American class of automobile launched and inspired by the Ford Mustang in 1964.

The term describes an affordable, compact, highly styled car with a sporty or performance-oriented image.

The purist would further define a Pony Car as a sporty compact car with a long hood and short deck. The original target were drivers under 30 years old. Mopar's true pony cars were the Plymouth Barracuda and Dodge Challenger.

Brand X pony cars include the Ford Mustang, Mercury Cougar, Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, and the AMC Javelin.
