Beginnings of a Wiki, feel free to improve

As it applies to drag racing, a spool is a device which ensures that both drive wheels of a car always spin at the same speed by providing a direct connecting of both the left and right axe with the ring and pinion gear. The purpose is traction.

It replaces the limited slip differential of a street car, which allows the drive wheels to turn at the different speeds needed in curves and turning, which straight line drag cars don't need.
